Steve Smith
Steve was born and reared in Indiana, a Hoosier. He attained an undergraduate degree the University ofIndiana in February, 1962, and immediately began a two year term as a U.S. Army intelligence officer.
Smith moved to Houston in 1966 to take a reporter/anchor position at Houstons KPRC-TV. Steve spent seven and a half years at KPRC , most of them as lead anchor. After a two-year anchor stint at Pittsburghs KDKA-TV, Smith returned to Houston in 1976 as lead anchor at KHOU-TV. He held that position for 23 years, retiring from television news in 1999.
Steve covered most of the major stories that occurred during his time as an anchor in Houston: the moon landings, the Challenger disaster, the Bush presidency, various hurricanes, political comings and goings, and the like. He was the only Houston anchor on the scene when the Berlin wall came down.
Reporting assignments took him to the North Sea, the British Isles, Japan, Singapore, Cairo, Israel, Kuwait, Paris, and Vienna. Smith contributes his time and talents to various arts and charity groups in the Houston area, and is an avid Galveston bay fisherman in his spare time.
